The Towering Inferno

The classic film starring Steve McQueen and Paul Newman about a group of well-to-do celebrants at the top floor of a skyscraper.

Cheap electrical wiring and bad construction management cause an enormous blaze at the lower floors, steadily rising to consume the revellers. Newman's an architect, McQueen a fire-fighter and Fred Astaire a kind old gentleman.

The feature-length 'I Was a Fireman', the story of 24 hours in the life of a fire crew during the Blitz, is an innovative work that should be as iconic to British cinema as Vigo's 'L'Atalante' is to French.
